When I first joined the police force, I had no idea where it was going to take me or what I was going to do when I got there. All I knew was it was the right thing for me to do at the time. I’m intuitive and when I make decisions I move quickly and follow them through.
I’m glad I did.
It was “perfect” for me.
I took opportunities when they came, so after I’d spent some time in Firearms, my mentor Liz said something to me that would change my life: “But have you ever thought about becoming a negotiator?”
Starting out as a negotiator, I placed myself “on call” to be available to respond to incidents requiring a negotiator alongside my day job. This was how I started to learn these new skills. All the while having my eye on making this part-time job more permanent, and becoming a full-time hostage and crisis negotiator.
That dream became a reality in 2012, the same year London hosted the Olympics. And the same year my life would become a little more crazy:
Negotiating with people who would go to extremes because of what they believed.
Negotiating with people who found themselves at the end of their tether, where they saw no future and wanted to end it all.
International negotiating following journalists desperate to uncover the real story behind the headlines during the Syrian crisis, and who consequently got kidnapped by ISIS.
International and national hostage situations, communicating with kidnappers who were brutal in their demands.
