Raising Teenagers Doesn't Come with a Manual

One moment they're telling you everything. The next, you're getting one-word answers, slammed doors and wondering what happened.

The teenage years can be some of the most rewarding and challenging years of parenting.

This day is for you if you are a parent or carer of a child aged 11 and above and you have ever thought:

  • Why won't they talk to me anymore?

  • How do I deal with constant arguments?

  • Am I being too strict or not strict enough?

  • How do I help them become independent without losing our connection?

  • Is what we're experiencing normal?

The Positive Parenting Summit has been created to help answer those questions.

Through expert insights, practical tools and honest conversations, you'll leave with a better understanding of your teenager, greater confidence in your communication and strategies you can use immediately at home.

What You Will Get From The Day

The Positive Parenting Summit brings together expert speakers, practical workshops, and a room full of parents who understand what you are going through.

  • Expert talks from specialists in teenage communication, neuroscience, wellbeing, step parenting, neurodiversity, and digital life

  • Practical workshops where you will learn tools you can use that evening

  • Real conversations with other parents (not theory, not textbooks, real life)

  • A full day of being seen, heard, and supported

  • A take-home resource pack with strategies and exercises

This is not a lecture. It is a day designed to change how you communicate with your teenager. You will leave with practical tools, new confidence, and the knowledge that you are part of a community of parents who get it.

Rachel Young

Behind the Behaviour

When is it more than “just being a teenager”?

  • LinkedIn

The teenage years can leave even the most confident parent wondering what is normal, what isn't, and when they should be concerned. Is the withdrawal, anger, anxiety, impulsive behaviour or growing distance from you part of growing up, or could something more be going on?

Rachel explores the developing teenage brain and what is happening beneath the behaviour we see during adolescence, from emotions and growing independence to changing relationships and the very individual ways young people develop. There is no single version of a “typical teenager”, and what is usual for one young person may look very different for another.

With a particular focus on teenage mental health, Rachel will explore the signs worth paying attention to and when there may be cause for concern. Most importantly, she will look at what parents and carers can actually do, how to support a young person at home, navigate the changing parent-child relationship, and know when and where to reach for further help.

Combining professional insight with personal experience, warmth, humour and real-world stories, Behind the Behaviour offers greater understanding, practical ways forward and a message of hope.

Rachel Young MBACP is a psychotherapist, counsellor, clinical hypnotherapist, trainer and speaker with extensive experience in mental health, emotional wellbeing and behaviour.

Alongside her private practice, Rachel has delivered training and wellbeing programmes across the NHS, education and corporate sectors, including work with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. She has also contributed to BBC News and BBC radio on mental health and wellbeing.

A qualified teacher as well as a therapist, Rachel has a particular interest in working with teenagers and young adults and understanding what may sit beneath changes in behaviour.

As a mum of five, Rachel combines clinical understanding with lived experience, warmth and humour, and a belief that young people should be understood as beautifully unique individuals rather than measured against somebody else's idea of “normal”.

What Parents Are Saying

'Sometimes it’s just good to hear that it’s not only you. Parenting teenagers is hard. You’re going to get things wrong, and that’s OK. Following Nicky’s tips has helped me realise there are things I can do differently and that things really can get better.'

Founder of the Positive Parenting Summit

Nicky Perfect spent 20 years in the police service, including specialist roles in hostage and crisis negotiation. She trained officers to communicate in the highest-pressure situations imaginable.

When she became a parent, she realised the same skills that saved lives in negotiation rooms could transform conversations at the kitchen table.

Today, Nicky helps parents of teenagers communicate with confidence, reduce conflict, and build stronger relationships. She is the host of The Let's Talk About Podcast, the creator of the Negotiating With Your Teenager course, and the founder of The Positive Parenting Summit.

She started this summit because she believes every parent deserves access to the tools that make family life better. Not theory. Not judgment. Just real, practical help.
